German Shepherd Dog History

The German Shepherd Dog (GSD) made its first appearance in the dog show ring in Hanover, Germany in 1882. This is considered the unofficial "birth" of the German Shepherd breed. However, the original German Shepherds weren't like today's modern fully coated beautiful animals. The original German Shepherds looked a lot more like mongrels, with a very coarse fur coat and tails quite a bit shorter than current GSDs. Although the German Shepherd breed began in the late 1800's, the configuration we are familiar with today, didn't really appear until the late 1940's and early 1950's.

Origins From Crossbreeding Working Sheep Dogs

Historical information relating to the origins of the German Shepherd Dog indicate the breed is the result of a cross-breeding program. A former German cavalry officer named Max von Stephanitz bred rural sheep dogs in an effort to breed a dog that could both herd animals and run along side farm animals for long distances. As a result the German Shepherd breed was born. In 1889 German Shepherds were displayed in their first breed show and the dog became popular in Germany. By 1906, German Shepherds were imported to the United States.

Introduction of German Shepherds into the United States was very important to the popularity of the GSD breed. The German Shepherd became a popular working dog for police and military purposes. The dog was also an excellent farm animal, capable of working long hours as a herder. German Shepherds were found to be excellent pets, as well.

In several countries, German Shepherds were called Alsations, particularly in the United Kingdom (England) and in France. The Alsation name comes from an area in France; Alsace, where Alsations were bred and quite popular. Another reason for the name variation is a direct result of the unpopularity of the word 'German' in European countries during and following the end of World War II.

German Shepherd Valued For Intelligence And Loyalty

German Shepherd dogs are considered one of the most intelligent dog breeds and are noted for being extremely devoted to their master. The GSD breed must have constant companionship and requires physical and mental stimulation. The German Shepherd is also well know for being loyal, very steady (as opposed to skittish), and has a high self esteem. German Shepherds are considered among the most courageous dogs. The German Shepherd dog is very even tempered; is not shy nor is it aggressive.

Dogs that resemble German Shepherds are known to exist, through studies by anthropologists., as long ago as 8,000 years. Perhaps more breeds of German Shepherd-like dogs have existed and evolved into other breeds - some of which did not survive or bred again with other breeds to change appearance and breed once again.
